Land of Turtles (and humans): Akumal

Land of Turtles (and humans): Akumal.

The name Akumal means “Land of the Turtles”. It’s a hatching ground for some of the most beautiful sea turtles you will see in your whole life. The number of sea turtles you see will vary depending on what time of the year it is, their arrival starts on May 1st and ends on October 30th, but you will always be able to see at least a few of them no matter what.

One of the best features of Akumal is its location, only twenty minutes away from Tulum and one hour from Playa del Carmen. It is part of the Riviera Maya area, located on Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay in Tulum Municipality. So if you are staying in those areas you can easily make a day trip to Akumal and see what everyone is talking about.

In Akumal you can stay in hotels or villas, but if you want to get around you will need a car rental, because the closest sights are at a 20 minutes drive. However, you can take taxis to go wherever you need to. There are also buses that run between Tulum and Playa del Carmen.

The town of Akumal is the ideal spot for anyone trying to get in touch with nature again. The beaches are perfect for relaxing and sunbathing, but also Akumal has a few cenotes close by, so you can check them out too. Also, you can visit its ecological center, learn about the ecosystem of the area and what you can do to protect it. It’s very close to one of the largest reefs in the world and you can find more than 200 entrances to caves and underground rivers to the delight of divers.

On the Akumal area known as Xaac, are discovered ruins that show the activities of the ancient Maya civilization. These ruins have been part of a shrine hidden in the jungle. You can go across them, see these constructions and in the end of the tour you can see an incredible view of the Caribbean Sea.

So, what are you waiting for? Check it out the next time you’re in the area and get some wonderful memories of Mexico!
