1. Playa del Carmen
This area is probably one of the most popular in all of the Riviera Maya, with tons of stores, restaurants, and more, right on the beach. If you don’t want to deal with crowds at the beach, head north and the number of people will start to dwindle. This is the perfect beach area for those who don’t particularly want to go out of their way for some time in the sand and sun.
2. Tulum
This ancient historical site is an unlikely beach spot, but it offers up beautiful white sand beach just like the rest. The best way to do Tulum is visit the archeological site first, and then take advantage of the bit of beach right next to one of the temples. The combination of ancient architecture and beautiful water makes for an unforgettable experience.
3. Playa Paraiso
Playa Paraiso in Tulum is a must see! This beach is stunningly beautiful with white powder sand. It’s a convenient and inexensive beach club, very clean and not crowded at all. You can rent luscious lounge chairs under a palapa and just relax while having your favorite drink.
4. Puerto Morelos
This may be the home of the best beaches in the Riviera Maya. The center of the town is where you can find the biggest beach of the area, with a friendly and relaxing atmosphere. If you’d rather try your luck at finding a more secluded area, just keep walking and you’ll run into the beaches that belong to different resorts. All of the beaches in Puerto Morelos have coral reefs all around them that are protected and perfect for exploring.
5. Akumal
The last beach of the list is probably one of the most breathtaking. The positioning of the reefs around it mean warmer waters and beautiful white sand. A nesting ground for sea turtles, you can expect to see some from May to November. The rest of the year is still a great time to visit, as the reef makes for a great snorkeling and scuba diving spot.
